Drivers beware: there’s another culvert out on the Western Highway.
This one is between miles and even and twelve. It’s not large; on the
surface it appears to be about the size of a basketball – but inside it
shows a breeched culvert and a road without any substrata support. We got the
news this evening from - who else? – Edmund Castro –the self–appointed
culvert caretaker. Castro was on the road when he saw someone putting sticks
in there to signal to drivers not to pass over it. Our team is just back form
the area. He explained the problem and the risks.
Hon. Edmund Castro, Minister of State in Ministry of Works
“What we are experiencing here once more is another collapsed culvert
here on the Western Highway so this goes to sure that yes indeed the entire
infrastructure along this part of the road here between 12 miles, or 7, 8 miles
and Belize City is in terrible conditions. So I was coming out of Burrell Boom
earlier this evening about 5:30 and I met a vehicle here trying to secure this
area because the culvert had collapsed. So we are on our way, trying to get
Ministry of Works out here, they should be out here shortly to make sure we
repair this one and after which we will need to take a serious look at all the
infrastructure dilapidation in this country.”
So again, drivers beware near mile eleven and a quarter. As Castro
noted – and as has been the case in the past work crews will be activated
to repair it tonight.
