It’s called the Micah Project – a major development that’s
planned by a U.S. consortium of educators, planners and an investor. But this
is no regular resort or tourism project – it’s a green city –
one that will be self sustainable and powered without fossil fuels. The plan
is that and much more, and this week developers and planners from the Washington
University at St. Louis are in Belize conducting seminars. It part of the ongoing
planning for the big project – which has been underway for the past four
years. And while it sounded pie in the sky-sih to us, principal developer David
Levinson outlined the purpose of the seminars and the plans for this shining
city in greater details.
David Levinson, Developer
“The seminars that are being held here today, tomorrow on alternative
energy and on education are in support of the Micah Project, a model city for
the developing world that has been four years in the planning that is to be
located here in Belize. A green city with no fossil fuel burnt, a city with
world class healthcare, world class education, a middle class city, a city not
only for the wealthy but for the average person providing all the amenities
of a superior community with swimming pools and playgrounds and tennis courts
– all the kinds of things that one would expect to have in the developed
world, we want to bring to the developing world.”
Jules Vasquez,
Sounds somewhat like a Utopian fantasy.
David Levinson,
“It is not Utopian in any way. It is based totally on a capitalist
model designed to produce jobs for Belizeans and also major immigration from
folks who would like to have a tropical paradise to live in and come around
the world.”
Levinson told us that no location for the development has been selected
yet – but he is down to three possible locations. Tomorrow, the group
form Washington University meets with representatives of the University of Belize.
