San Pedro Police are tonight in possession of 25 kilos of cocaine – that’s
about 55 pounds. The bale was found two miles north of San Pedro Town along
the coast near Palapa Bar.
The official story is that it was handed over, but 7NEWS has learnt that a
citizen friendly to police led officers to the spot from yesterday. Searches
turned up nothing and this morning the 25 packs of a kilo each were found just
a few feet away from where the team had been searching yesterday.
The officer in charge of the island town’s Police ASP Dennis Arnold told
the San Pedro Sun that the resident was travelling along the beach when he noticed
a bag floating along the shoreline. When the male resident opened the bag, he
noticed 25 packages neatly wrapped and suspected them to contain cocaine.
According to Arnold, this is likely part of a much bigger drop, as two weeks
ago, the Police Department received information of a possible “wet drop”
along the coast of Ambergris Caye. The Anti-Drugs Unit was dispatched to the
area but they didn’t recover anything. Other sources tell us that the
drop may have been lost in a transfer between Belize and Mexico.
The drugs carry a street value in the United States of over a million Belize
dollars.
