A new game show premieres tonight on Channel 7 – but it’s
no game, it’s what the show’s developers call edutainment. The name
of the show is Challenge Belize and it is a part of a new series of educational
game shows developed by the Primary School Principal’s Association to
make learning more fun and interactive. The idea was born in 2005, floated publicly
in 2006, the shows were taped in 2007, and they will be aired every two weeks
starting tonight at 8:00 on Channel 7. Challenge Belize is the first and it
is a show designed in the style of the jeopardy quiz show. Principal Cruzita
Castillo is one of the writers.
Cruzita Castillo, Writer
“I am one of the main writers for Challenge Belize and this game show
particularly deals with Social Studies and the science aspect where students
from various schools will be coming on the show to test their knowledge in science
and social studies questions. It is based on the Jeopardy show.”
Delarai Sanchez,
“We are going to have four series; nine shows per series. And so we
are just embarking on the first. Challenge
Belize is the first show of the nine
series. We plan to show a different show every two weeks. And so right now it
is Challenge Belize, in two weeks time you are going to see ‘People, faces,
places,’ and then two weeks after that it is going to be math.
This is the way the world is going; technology is the way and we see that
children look technology, you just have to watch them at play and in this way
we will be able to reach a lot of them as well as their homes where the parents
are at and everybody will be learning. It is also for family time, for example
in the evening when they come home, parents can sit with their children and
they can learn together and then the parents will be able to assist the children
also in areas that they don’t know. It is also going to help parents to
help their children with their homework.”
The students don’t actually win prizes but they get a small token.
The other writers are Judith Dawson, Faye Davis, and Delarai Sanchez. Tune in
for it tonight at 8:00 on Channel 7.
