There was a shootout in Belize City last night – and it all started with
a drunken domestic dispute. It began around 11 which is when police received
information that one 30 year old Jimmy Singh had allegedly pulled a gun on his
ex Kimberly Westby. Police responded and began pursuing Singh who was driving
a gold Toyota Hilux. The high speed chase ended up on Newtown Barracks. A waiting
mobile had the road in front of where the Putt Putt Bar used to be blocked –
but it didn’t work quite as how they planned.
That is because Singh parked his Hilux and while officers were approaching
–the sound of gunfire erupted. The officers ran for cover and Singh jumped
behind the wheel of his Hilux and sped off. By this time it was a high speed
chase and a shootout. It ended at the corner of Baymen Avenue and Ninth Street
where Singh was finally forced to stop. He laid face down and was arrested.
Police say he appeared be under the influence and they found a 9 milimeter gun
in the vehicle.
This afternoon he was arraigned for keeping unlicensed firearm and one count
of driving motor vehicle with alcohol above the prescribe limit. He was undefended
and pleaded guilty to both charges. Magistrate Edd Usher sentenced Singh to
2 years in jail for the unlicensed firearm possession and a year for driving
under the influence of alcohol. The sentences are to run concurrently and so
he will only spend two years for those charges.
We stress that is the sentence for those charges since Singh is still at the
CIB Office where police are preparing to levy more charges on Singh for the
shootout and high speed chase. Those charges are expected to be brought tomorrow.
