A Bizarre Accident & the Minor Miracle
posted (February 5, 2009)

There was a bizarre accident on the Western Highway yesterday and it’s a minor miracle that no one was seriously injured. Around 4:30 pm, an Isuzu Rodeo which was heading towards Belize City rammed into the guard rail on the Burdon Creek Bridge. The impact was massive and it catapulted the SUV into the air. Lennox Sutherland who witnessed it all from his verandah two hundred feet away told us what happened next.

Lennox Sutherland, Witness
“I was sitting right there and I was looking and I all I heard was bang. And when I looked, I saw a vehicle spin up in the air and drop between the two bridges on its back, because it was turned over.”

Jules Vasquez,
So it did a somersault then?

Lennox Sutherland,
“It did a somersault.”

Jules Vasquez,
So when you saw it, it was above the bridge?

Lennox Sutherland,
“About four feet up.”

Jules Vasquez,
Upside down?

Lennox Sutherland,
“Yes. It turned over in the air and then I saw it go down.”

Jules Vasquez,
And then a crashing sound?

Lennox Sutherland,
“No, no. The crashing sound was the bang and then it spin.”

Jules Vasquez,
And then it landed it water.

Lennox Sutherland,
“Well it went down between the bridge and everybody ran. I can’t run so fast so I got up close there and then I heard somebody say, ‘help,’ and there was somebody going down with the current in the river and then somebody had a boat over there and then got out and helped him.”

Jules Vasquez,
Seeing what happened, were you surprised that no one got seriously injured?

Lennox Sutherland,
“Yes I was surprised because when something spins over like that, you expect casualties but just the drowning one, they caught him and there was an ambulance passing and they took him to town.”

As for the wheels which you didn’t see on the truck, those were stolen during the course of the night. Police have not released the names of those involved. Eyewitnesses told us no one was seriously hurt beyond cuts and bruises.
