All Points Bulletin for Lionfish
posted (February 5, 2009)

Last night we told you about the lionfish threat on Belize’s reef – and today, the Fisheries Department announced that anyone seeing the lionfish anywhere in Belizean waters, please try to catch it and report it to them. If you see or catch the fish, you can call, 224-4552 or 223-2623 or email information of reported sightings to species@btl.net. And if you do call, the folks at Fisheries are asking that you have the following information: location – preferably GPS coordinates, depth and time of sighting.

The department warns that studies have shown that the lionfish can adversely affect reef species almost immediately; reducing what’s known as recruitment of reef fish species by 79% within five weeks. Certainly a dangerous predator, but not only to other fish, as the lionfish are poisonous and have a vicious bite.
