Tonight the king of lover’s rock the legendary Beres Hammond
is in Belize. He probably needs no introduction because before Demarco, Richie
Spice, and Gyptian – there was Beres. He arrived today for a valentine’s
concert on Saturday night at the Princess poolside. Hammond will perform with
his 18 member band. He told us what to expect.
Keith Swift Reporting,
This afternoon an unassuming Beres Hammond walked out of the arrival lounge
and into Belize for his second coming.
Beres Hammond, Performing Saturday night
“It is really a pleasure after a long time. It is nice to be back
here. It feels just like yesterday.”
Keith Swift,
You have any fond memories of Belize?
Beres Hammond,
“The people at the concert, they seem to know all the songs. So that
makes life a literally easier for me when you can go some place and people sing
almost every line of your song. Then why sing.”
But Beres Hammond will sing - and it will be songs from his huge catalogue
of hits. He says there will be something old and something new – but more
importantly - anything goes.
Beres Hammond,
“It is going to be a mixture and usually I never set a show. I try
not to set up like a show. I don’t know how to do that. I know to sing
the songs so like I said before usually it is the audience that pushes you along,
makes you do crazy things sometime too.”
Keith Swift,
So what can fans expect from you on Saturday night?
Beres Hammond,
“I don’t know, you tell me. I am here and I am willing to sing
all my songs and hope that the people will be in a very good mood and I am sure that they will help me along with the show and overall I think it is going to
be one beautiful show.”
And Beres Hammond has been the star of the show from the early 70s. He has
been carrying the torch of lover’s rock for four decades now and can boast
of an enduring popularity and longevity that few can claim. He says it is because
he keeps it real.
Beres Hammond,
“I am already ready and willing to embrace any major change or whatever
social change that takes place anywhere because one has to live and I appreciate
what is happening with the youths nowadays. I give them thumbs up for their
efforts in trying to experiment and make their own music. With Demarco it is
nice to see one and two of the youths coming along on this train, a train that
seems to never stop. I think it is a smart move for him.”
Keith Swift,
You don’t think they are jumping on your bandwagon though?
Beres Hammond,
“No, no. I came and I jumped on a wagon. It has been good to me. I
try to live my life in the love of the common people. When you live around the
ordinary man, you get a chance to peek into his soul. If you isolate yourself
then you’re only going to be able to sing about the birds and the bees. So when you around people, you actually become a part of their thoughts, their
everyday thoughts and struggles.”
Keith Swift,
Are ‘Double Trouble’, ‘No Disturb Sign’ from personal
experiences?
Beres Hammond,
“I figured that’s what you would have said. It is all of our
experiences. Yes I have my little taste of it too.”
Keith Swift,
How has Beres managed to stay relevant in that your fan base continues to grow?
Beres Hammond,
“I guess it’s, I don’t even want to guess – I think
it is because I try to keep it real.”
And that’s what he plans to do on Saturday night.
Beres Hammond,
“You have all the reasons in the world to come out. It is a Valentine’s
time and I don’t think I would rather to be in any other place today than
in Belize where I wanted to be for a long time again. So just come parry. Overall,
it is pure love. That is all the reason you should come.”
His band arrives tomorrow.
