St. Ignatius boys and the La Democracia girls are champions of the
Belize District Primary School basketball tournament. They battled all day at
the City Center for a chance to represent the Belize District at the nationals
next week. The competition started last month with 14 male teams and 5 female
teams – and it came down to the finals today. National Sports Coordinator
Charlie Slusher says only two teams will advance.
Charlie Slusher, National Sports Coordinator
“This is basically a qualifying game for your school to be able to
play in the nationals. So what happened is normally we would have a town competition
and then we have the rural, as long as you are within the Belize District then
there are two separate competitions that are played and then today you come
together and you get one representative that will represent the entire Belize District for the nationals.
The winners, a male and a female will represent the Belize District and
will play in the upcoming championship primary school nationals that will be
held next week, I think it is the 20th and the 21st, it will be a two day event
in Orange Walk. So that is when we will get who is the primary school champion
for the entire country.
The importance of the tournament is just to continue letting our kids have
something positive to do and try to get them into love exercising and sports
on a whole because as they grow up it will be very beneficial to them and we
need to encourage them. If you look right now, there are on the court and the
more we can get this atmosphere going in our towns and our cities I think when
it comes to some of our crime problems, we will have less stress. You know growing
up when you used to pass the Technical Court in the evening it was difficult
for you to get a chance to play and now all our playgrounds are really abandoned
and it is a sad situation. So I am hoping that with our efforts and maybe other
stakeholders’ efforts that we can start encouraging back our kids to go
at the court or go at the playground just to do positive things and enjoy themselves.”
The finals are next weekend in Orange Walk Town and again for the Belize
District it will be La Democracia Government School for the females and St.
Ignatius Primary representing the boys.
