Street Games Are Here
posted (February 12, 2009)

On Sunday, an event called the Street Games will be held in downtown Belize City. But more than just youth football and basketball played on the Albert Street blacktop, it will feature bicycle races around the Albert and Regent Streets circuit. Organizer’s Jerome Peel Off Maheia and City Councillor Phillip Willoughby told us there will also be family entertainment.

Jerome Peel Off Maheia, Organizer
“It something important for them to come out and watch because it is the first time we will be bringing this game on Albert Street and it is something the kids are longing for, to come downtown and make the people see it.”

Jules Vasquez,
You all will have performers as well, entertainment as well?

Jerome Peel Off Maheia,
“Yes we will have some entertainers. We will have some local artists like Dan Man, Easy Glen, and those guys.”

Phillip Willoughby, City Councillor
“The whole family can come out and interact. We will be having musical entertainment. The kids can utilize the bouncy castle. We will be distributing ice cream. The prizes within itself are really attractive for all the participants and those who win on the day for the prizes and so forth.”

Jules Vasquez,
Are you doing this in time for the election because it is in a few weeks?

Phillip Willoughby,
“Well no we continue to work. After election is come and gone we will continue to work as we’ve always been doing for the residents of the city. So it is not an election gimmick. Street games have been functioning since the day after we got into office.”

Willoughby has also entered his name for what we are told will be a very crowded Freetown Division convention. It is rumoured that as many as four other candidates are interested in becoming the standard bearer for that division including Chon Saan owner, Li Mark Chang.
