On our Friday night newscast we showed you the picture of this man wanted by
police after he was caught on surveillance camera inside an Orange Walk Belize
Bank ATM machine allegedly raiding the account of Cuban Dr. Marco Deville. Well
today Orange Walk Police informed 7News that they have caught the man captured
on tape. He has been identified as Orange Walk Town resident Carlos Reyes.
Police investigations reveal that Carlos Reyes allegedly started withdrawing
money from Dr. Deville’s account in December. Records also show that during
December and February Reyes made a total of fifty four withdrawals from the
same account that amounted to a total of twenty three thousand dollars. Initially
Dr. Marco Deville had named another man who he left to house sit during the
summer as a possible suspect. But the bank card fraud didn’t start until
six months after that man left the house in December – and police don’t
have any real evidence tying him to the card or the man in the ATM.
So Carlos Reyes is presently on his own, charged for fifty four counts of theft.
So how did Reyes get his hands on the doctor’s bank card? Well Dr. Deville
told police that the card was stolen from his personal belongings inside his
room. But Reyes, who according to police has not denied being in possession
of the card, has allegedly claimed that he found the card inside garbage on
the street, not inside the owner’s home. Reyes explained to police that
he is a sanitation worker at the Orange Walk Town Council
But if that’s how he got the card, how did he get the pin number? Simple:
it was written on a paper inside the card holder. And while police try to unscramble
the clues, Reyes was today released on $10,000 bail and ordered to re-appear
on the 25th of March.
