Belize & Mexico Talking Cooperation
posted (February 26, 2009)

Technocrats from Belize and Mexico are spending the next two days discussing, developing, and finalizing projects and areas of cooperation. It is the 7th meeting of the Mexico Belize Mixed Commission. It opened yesterday evening but work began this morning and will continue through to tomorrow. The projects are vast but Foreign Service Officer Rafael Baptist from Belize and Gina Aguilar Williams from the Embassy of Mexico gave us an idea of what’s being discussed.

Rafael Baptist, Foreign Service Officer
“The areas that we are looking at for the technical and scientific cooperation has to do with agriculture, health, natural resources, and the environment. Actually some of these projects that we are looking at in some cases are a continuation of projects that we have been working with already under the previous mixed commission.”

Gina Aguilar Williams, Embassy of Mexico
“The government of Mexico, it is very important for us the cooperation. So this will be the seventh signing of the commission but prior to the signing of the commission they have to meet experts to do the projects together to in benefit of Belize. So the government never gives money, just technical cooperation, so they have to meet together to really make the projects and send it to Mexico and be signed next April.”

Rafael Baptist,
“In addition to the normal cooperation that Belize and Mexico engages in, with the new administration we are looking at not necessarily the traditional means of cooperation but also other new areas of cooperation. It doesn’t have to be a big project but a small project that could impact the grassroots people.”

Within two months a final draft will be submitted to the governments of both countries to be signed.
