At least twenty five CARICOM Heads of Governments will be meeting in Belize
City tomorrow for the twentieth intercessional meeting of CARICOM heads. Among
the critical topics of discussion over the next two days will be the effects
of the current global economic and financial crisis on the region and the possible
mitigation actions.
Other topics up for discussion will be the implementation of the economic partnership
agreement with the European Union and the status of negotiations for a trade
and development agreement between CARICOM and Canada. Today in a preliminary
session, the Prime Ministerial subcommittee met to review progress on the CARICOM
single market which has entered its fourth year of operation – but is
still not widely implemented. They will also review a status report on the free
movement of persons.
The Caricom single market came into existence on January first, 2006. The single
economy is expected to be established by 2015.
