The Crooked Tree Causeway was submerged for months during the flood
of late 2008. Right up until December, residents were using boats to get on
and off the Crooke Tree Island. But now relief is on the way. Area representative
Edmund Castro is spearheading a one point two million dollar upgrading of the
causeway. He told us the difference it will make.
Hon. Edmund Castro, Belize Rural North Area Rep.
“During the past flood many of us have seen the devastation that the
people of Crooked Tree could not reach to the island of Crooked Tree or leave.
So what we are doing is raising the causeway about 4 to 5 feet in some areas
so that never again will the people of Crooked Tree be trapped here again. This
last time the people of Crooked Tree took until December before they could have
returned back into their vehicles to the island of Crooked Tree. In this instance
we will not be talking about paving the causeway because we need to make sure
the road is wide enough, it is durable, and it will be a nice all weather road.”
Castro also undertakes to finish the controversial road to Blackburn
in this dry season.
