The Belize City dump at mile three on the Western Highway was burning
this morning, and while it does happen at this time of year, the concern is
that going into the long weekend, it could cause a stink across the city. This
morning we spoke to councillor with responsibility for sanitation Phillip Willoughby
about it.
Phillip Willoughby, Councillor in Charge of Sanitation
“I believe that needs be, we need to send in a excavator, sometime
between now and midday we will do so, so that we can extinguish the fire problem.
We are grateful for the cold front and the little rain that came down I would
say about one o’clock this morning, a nice little shower came down, and
the cool atmosphere at this time is helping the situation. But nonetheless,
we need to get to the bottom of the fire and an excavator would be the ideal equipment for us to solve that particular problem.”
Jules Vasquez,
Okay now we’re coming up on the long weekend, the holiday weekend, we
know a lot of people will be at home and how much a risk is there that the offending
putrid smoke will be wafting into Belize City?
Phillip Willoughby,
“I believe that no later than midday today we will have this problem
resolved. So I don’t think any wafting smell or fumes or any contaminants
will affect anyone in the Faber’s Road area or in the Jane Usher area
or in the Western Highway. I believe we will have this situation under control
before going into the holiday weekend. This is the plan and the strategy from
the Fire Department.”
That excavator did not come through as none was available. That is
needed to unearth the fire from the base. Up to this afternoon at 4:30 it was
still burning and Willoughby says they will try to get the exactor tomorrow.
