Fire officials who are usually plain-spoken about burning buildings, brush
fires and accidents have suddenly gone silent on trying to extinguish an internal
flame that involves thousands of dollars missing from the Fire Chief’s
office.
Assistant Fire Chief Ted Smith reported to Belize City police that sometime
between March twenty third and April fifth a person or persons entered the boss’s
room, went to a filing cabinet and snatched a manila envelope with fifteen thousand,
eight hundred dollars. The stolen cash was money to finance the training of
new recruits.
Of course the robbery is suspected to be an inside job but we could get no
one from the fire service to speak to us about the incident but only directed
our calls to the new Fire Chief John Briggs who we understand has been out of
office for most of the day dealing with the police.
