Downtown Streets Dug Up Again
posted (April 15, 2009)

Traffic was a mess in downtown Belize City today and that is because king street between Albert and Regent Streets was closed for construction. While it may have looked like Belize Water Services dug up the street for maintenance, again – Mayor Zenaida Moya and councillor in charge of works on the southside Dean Samuels told us that the street was being finished with cobblestone.

Dean Samuels, Councillor in Charge of Works (Southside)
“We are focusing on getting these streets done. The Works Department and the Belize City Council has teamed up with the business community to ensure that we get these situations solved, these streets fixed.”

Zenaida Moya, Mayor of Belize City
“This project all has to do with a collaboration with the private business community. We have the other seven streets that we do want to work with the private sector. We know that it will be a win-win situation. I know in the case here we have Atlantic Bank who is sponsoring this particular work, the materials and everything, and we know that definitely commendation should go to them. It is a win-win situation in that it will uplift the area around them. Already we have the Albert and Regent Streets that are paved, however this particular street is a sore eye to them and even a little nuisance to those drivers and even their customers. We’re looking at the other streets and we know there are a lot of other well to do businesses around here; there are more banks, more hotels, there is more hardware stores, there is definitely some utility companies and of course we have the TV stations that are here that it would definitely help them.”

Work should be completed by the end of the week. Again Atlantic Bank is paying for that portion and the City Council is inviting other businesses to do the same with the other 7 cross streets. And while Mayor Moya and Councillor Samuels had a lot to say about the cobblestone street – both were mum on the hole BWSL dug into Albert Street near its junction with South Street. The only thing they would say is that BWSL will have to pay for the hole to recovered with hot mix...and we’ve heard that before, months ago actually and nothing has happened yet.
