Chinese national Guo Dahau has spent the last ten years riding around the world on his mountain bike. That’s right – he is riding around the world on a bike. He started in Beijing China in 1999 and since then has gone on to 90 other countries – including Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Australia. His 91st country was Belize and he stopped by our studios today to tell us about his trip around the world.

When did you start?

Guo Dahau,
“I started in 1999. I begin in China, Beijing and continued. The first country was Kazakhstan.”

Keith Swift,
And how many countries have you visited since?

Guo Dahau,
“I been about 91 countries is finished on mountain bike.”

Keith Swift,
Why are you doing this?

Guo Dahau,
“I want to travel around the world, it was my idea. I worked hard for about eight years, I saved money. There was no marriage, no dancing, no drinking, no smoking – I saved money to continue.”

When you go to these countries where do you sleep?

Guo Dahau,
“Travelling is outside. A lot of days I camp out, sometimes I go in the church.”

Which is your favourite country, which country have you enjoyed the most?

Guo Dahau,
“Belize.”

Guo Dahau plans to travel to 15 other countries. He now moves on to the United States and then Canada. A few notes are that his bike has been stolen 7 times. Also it is probably more accurate to say he has ridden in 91 countries since he has travelled to some countries by plane. He generally camps out in cemeteries since for him that’s the safest place. In Belize however he is being assisted by the Belize Chinese Association and the Taiwanese Embassy.
