A cyclist was run over on Saturday night on the Northern Highway –
and tonight the man responsible is still on the run. 40 year old Roldan Trapp
was riding from his home in Trinidad Farm to Ladyille when at mile 12, he was
knocked down by what witnesses say was a ford ranger that was out of control
and cavorting across the road. We were at the scene on Saturday night.
Keith Swift Reporting,
On Saturday night the body of 40 year old Roldan Trapp was on one side of the
Northern Highway at mile 11 and his bike, or what remained of it – was
on another. Roldan was riding his bicycle in the direction of Ladyville when
the driver of this Ford Ranger pickup knocked him down and then drove off.
Denfield Moody and Steven Diaz – were witnesses and also victims as the
out of control Ford Ranger side-swipped the passenger side of Diaz’s car
– damaging it.
Denfield Moody, Witness
“We were coming from a fishing trip going towards Belize City and
when we got by Los Lagos, we saw a pickup just fly past us, scraped us, and knocked down the man.”
Steven Diaz, Witness
“He knocked the person and it looked like because he knocked the person,
he must have become conscious we were behind him and he tried to brush us and
drift over to the other side of the road and went. But when we stopped and checked
what had happened, he had already gone already and my car doesn’t have
take off so I couldn’t catch him.”
The license plate number is 1334. Ladyville police say they found the Ford
Ranger last night.
Insp. Calbert Flowers, OIC - Ladyville Police
“Our investigation led us to the recovery of a red Ford Ranger pickup
yesterday night which we believe may have been involved in this incident. However
we are still seeking the driver of that vehicle. We’ve had several eyewitnesses
on the scene who are cooperating with us and we are exploring every possible
lead we have to try and apprehend the person responsible for this offense.”
Keith Swift,
So you know whose the owner of the truck and you can’t find him?
Insp. Calbert Flowers,
“We have a name of a person who we believe owned this truck but we
cannot reveal the name at this time.”
Keith Swift,
Where did you find the truck?
Insp. Calbert Flowers,
“The truck was found in Ladyville on the highway, it was being pulled
by a tow truck. The truck had extensive damage to the front portion; the bannet,
the windshield – the type of damage that would be consistent with a hit
and run accident.”
Keith Swift,
Was speed a factor here sir?
Insp. Calbert Flowers,
“We believe yes that speed was a factor. The investigation revealed
that Mr. Trapp was indeed riding on the right hand side of the road and the
correct side of the road. In fact he was far off the road, on the shoulder of
the road.”
And that is what has made Trapp’s sudden tragic death troubling to his
family – and the 5 kids now left without a father.
Keith Swift,
When you got to the scene was your brother still alive?
Yuldani Mas, Brother of Deceased
“No, my brother wasn’t alive. My brother was done dead already.”
Keith Swift,
So he was killed on the spot. They still haven’t found this driver, what
would you want to say to this driver?
Yuldani Mas,
“Just mek the man know what all he did. He took away someone’s
life like that. Maybe he is not feeling nothing but he left a family here di
feel because he left five children who nuh have no ma or no pa. What will the
kids do? That is my older brother too.”
At this time, police are not releasing the name of either the driver
of the vehicle or the name of the vehicle’s owner.
