A 20 year old Belize City woman was held by police overnight after she was
accused of beating her primary school aged cousin so badly that he had to be
hospitalized. Yesterday, the Magistrate asked police to hold her overnight until
she could get a report on whether the injuries to the child’s eye would
cause permanent damage.
Fortunately, the conclusion was that there would be no permanent damage, so
today in court, Kendra Madrill received bail for a single charge of dangerous
harm. A doctor confirmed that the child had been injured to his eyes, back and
mouth. It happened on Tuesday allegedly after the child had misbehaved in school
– and the beating at home with a belt was – it appears – an
additional punishment.
The Department of Social Services has intervened and the child has been taken
into the Child Care Center according to our reports.
