And while many businesses will try and avoid what boils down to one
more tax, Moya and Willoughby say there will be enforcement.
Mayor Zenaida Moya,
“We make it very clear that because we understand there is a high
possibility that people will want to evade paying and being responsible corporate
citizens like what Councillor Willoughby rightly spoke about, we are ensuring
that there are certain mechanisms in place. So we will know exactly, we have
the roster in terms of the businesses who will be paying into the council. The
other persons should in fact be paying at the dumpsite. So we will also look
to see whether or not if they are not paying here, they are paying at the dumpsite.
If they are not paying at either one, we know there is a problem and what Councillor
Willoughby spoke about, that means these persons are creating hot spots and
we are trying to avoid the continuance of hot spots, whether it is within Belize
City or whether it is at mile 8. So again we will do our part to ensure that
people comply.”
Phillip Willoughby,
“The Police Department on the Western Highway along with our sanitation
unit will be monitoring persons moving garbage unilaterally within the city.
They will not pass the checkpoint. I have communicated with the Commissioner
of Police and Assistant Commissioner I believe Mr. Henderson, don’t permit
those persons to exit the city with any sort of garbage.”
