The Belizean Grove – it sounds like some resort tucked deep in the Belizean
rainforest – but it’s actually a US based women’s leadership
group. It’s making news in the United States because Supreme Court
Nominee Sonia Sotomayore is a member of the group and the Senate confirmation
committee is alleging that it raises the possibility that she’s a member
of a group that practices discrimination – in this case, discriminating
against men in the Belizean Grove – whose members are all women.
And while it’s named the Belizean Grove, in fact it hasn’t got
that much to do with Belize. The private organization of female professionals
meet annually for a retreat in Belize and many other countries in the America’s
from Peru to New York. Sonia Sotomayor was recently nominated by President Barack
Obama to be the first Hispanic justice and the third woman to serve in the court.
Her confirmation hearings began three days ago.
