There are two more handguns on the street – and both of them were stolen
from the vehicles of license holders. The one stolen last night was from Joel
Chi, the Minister of Tourism’s driver. At 7:00 last night, he parked the
ministerial Prado on Newtown Barracks in the vicinity of the Belize Mexico Institute
and went to visit a friend who lives nearby.
When he returned after eight, he found that the SUV had been burglarized.
A number of items were stolen most importantly his Glock 9 millimeter pistol
with two full clips, each loaded with 17 live rounds. Also missing was a Samsonite
carry bag which contained a pair of Honduran passports, assorted land documents
and other personal items.
That gun has not been recovered and there are no suspects. The same can be
said for Karl Pickwoad’s handgun, also a 9 millimeter glock 17 –
the only difference is, his one only had 5 live rounds. He reported to police
that it was stolen from his 1997 Lincoln car between 2:30 and 2:45 on Saturday
morning while he was parked at the Palm Island nightclub. The thieves also stole
his $800 pair of Prada sunglasses and an Ipod.
A ccording to a police press release, Assistant Commissioner David Henderson
warns gun owners to be more cautious, as carelessness may cause the person to
be denied a gun license in the future.
