Ladyville Police Roughed Up Margaret Casanova
posted (June 18, 2009)

For a brief period today Ladyville Police detained Merivaldo Casanova. He was detained pending investigations into a stolen bike which he maintained and later proved was his. But that’s not what has his wife Margaret Casanova angry. Margaret travelleed from her home in Ladyville to our studio in Belize City to complain about how she was treated at the Ladyville Police Station.

Margaret Casanova, Upset with Police
“They get to find out that that was his own bicycle which he had for seven years and then they had no idea how sick this man was sick. This man just took a risk to go and pay this water bill this morning. I was in my house when I heard this neighbour came and called me and told me the police just done harass your husband out here.

I went to the police station to ask about my husband and this officer just drive me out of the station like an animal, like a dog in an aggressive way. He didn’t even answer the question I went to asked him about my husband. I am so upset. I live in Ladyville 28 years and my husband, I live with my husband 36 years and I never find my husband to be a criminal or a thief. My husband is a licensed contractor. He worked honestly for his daily bread everyday.

The thing which has me upset right now is because in case of crime or robbery or anything in the country in the villages, it is we the public who have to assist the police. So when we go to the police station or anything, they should treat we like human beings, not like an animal. You go there for assistance about what this person in your family did or what happened and they just drive you out of the station like a dog, like an animal. What kind of thing that.”

Casanova says she has filed a report with internal affairs.
