Yesterday we told you about BEL’s imminent power supply crisis with their
Westlake Generator being down for service and CFE having to cut them off starting
tomorrow. It amounts to a shortfall of 48 megawatts and could force rolling
outages. Today the PUC proposed a solution.
A release says: “BEL will likely be forced to resort to scheduled,
rotating power outages...over the next two (2) weeks. “ It continues:
“The Government, the Minister and BEL have been negotiating with the
Mexican Government and CFE to secure some form of power supply. The Minister
has entered into an emergency agreement with BEL and Belize Aquaculture Limited
to temporarily supply up to 10 Megawatts of excess capacity, and a concerted
effort will be made over the next few days to expedite the repairs on the lost
generation facilities to minimize any power outages. “
Finally, it advises consumers to curtail electricity consumption as much as
possible. This may reduce the need for power outages and to make necessary plans
or arrangements for alternative power supply while larger consumers with standby
generation capacity are urged to use of their standby generators.
