Earlier on, we told you about the investigation into missing money
at the Border Management Office at the western border. Police say the file is
now with the DPP and more than one person may be charged. But the key suspect
is Julio Santos – he was terminated under suspicion of theft. He told
us that the area representative, Minister and UDP Deputy Leader Erwin Contreras
is his cousin, like a brother to him. Well today Contreras told us that is so,
but he can’t offer Santos any protection.
Hon. Erwin Contreras, Minister of Economic Development
“Yes I know that every night it is the same news on Channel 5 and
Channel 7 and that he is politically appointed. I should say that all the people
at Border Management in Benque Viejo are politically connected in one way or
the other. Some of them were my campaigners but what happened there is in the
hands of police and the law will take its course. We will not condone any illegal
or wrongdoing at Border Management.”
Keith Swift,
“Is he like a brother to you?”
Hon. Erwin Contreras,
“Well he is a close friend of mine. We used to play football together.
His dad is cousin to my dad so we grew up almost together but that doesn’t
mean I will condone any kind of illegal activities involving Border Management.”
So far, police investigation shows that Julio Santos only signed one
of the six missing deposits.
