Last night, we told you that the National Trade Union Congress of Belize had
written to the Prime Minister asking for greater say in the setting up of the
Commission of Inquiry into wrongdoing at the KHMH. They wanted to consult on
the chair; they wanted the representative from the judiciary to be replaced
with a representative of some other body and they wanted to assist in developing
the terms of reference.
Well, the Prime Minister wrote back today and basically his position is “we
run things, things noh run we." According to a senior staffer in his office,
first, there will be a member of the judiciary on the commission; in fact that
member, Justice Adolph Lucas will be the chair. Second, the Prime Minister will
take seriously all suggestions for terms of reference from the NTUCB; he will
also review terms form the memorandum of understanding hammered out between
the Medical Union and the KHMH Board, but in the end, the Prime Minister will
set the terms of reference.
