It doesn’t open in U.S. theatres until October 16th but you can
see Michael Jai’s new film “Black Dynamite” on Saturday night
at ten o’clock at the Bliss. Jai who has played Mike Tyson on HBO and
starred in “Why Did I Get Married” on the big screen is both the
star and producer of “Black Dynamite.” It is a comedy which has
been getting rave reviews in film festivals from Sundance to Edinburgh. And
that is why Michael Jai is in Belize to promote black dynamite at Belize’s
international film festival. He spoke with Keith Swift about this movie this
evening.
Michael Jai, Producer & Actor
“I was invited and I was happy to accept. One of the things I intend
on doing is once I started my company is that I want to branch out and really
get relationships all over the world, especially with people of colour to bond
together and look at how to service each other worldwide. So that is part of my aim and plus I love to learn and I’ve never been to Belize.
The movie is an action comedy, it takes place in the 70s, back when there
was a time when, there was an era called the black-ploitation era when you had
movies like Shaft, Super Fly, and these very powerful action types of black
men. It was actually the first time we even had something like that in film
and so it is kind of a representation of those days. But it is a tongue in cheek
comedy.”
Keith Swift,
“For people at home tonight who look at you and say I’ve seen you
somewhere before – where would that have been?”
Michael Jai,
“Well let’s see, people remember Spawn quite a bit and there
is the Mike Tyson story, Exit Wounds, and this little movie called Dark Knights,
it is a little tiny movie that came out last year and it made a little bit of
money. I was in that movie. Why did I get married is what people are seeing
quite a bit now.”
Jai also has seven martial arts black belts. Again –Saturday
night’s screening of Black Dynamite begins at 10 at the Bliss and the
cost to get in is $10.
