A man was killed in Belize City today – shot in the street at
noon. But this isn’t the usual script of senseless gang violence, or the
so-called “old beef” – it is the case of an armed man who
was being robbed at gunpoint defending himself with deadly force.
It left Roshane Andrewin dead in the street with multiple gunshot wounds.
A sad ending for any family, but the mother of this 22 year old didn’t
offer any of the usual excuses for her son; she conceded that maybe he put himself
in a dangerous situation. Here’s more.
Jacqueline Godwin, Reporting
This photo captured on a cell phone camera by a witness shows twenty two year
old Roshane Andrewin slumped over his beach cruiser bicycle on the pavement
on vernon street.
He was barely alive, after receiving multiple gunshot wounds to the body.
A police patrol team in the area responded quickly and rushed Roshane Andrewin
to the KHMH but he died shortly after.
Inspector Hilberto Romero – Dep. OIC, CIB
“Police responded after the shooting, that is when he was found.”
Back at the scene this pool of blood marks the spot where twenty two year old
victim fell as he was shot.
But Roshane Andrewin is no innocent victim of gun violence; in fact he was
shot by a man he held up and robbed at gun point.
The man was standing in this yard with three friends when Roshane Andrewin
rushed into the yard and robbed him.
According to deputy officer in charge of crimes investigation in Belize City
Inspector Hilberto Romero the victim did try to get back his jewellery by ordering
the fleeing robber to stop.
But Roshane Andrewin did not stop; instead he pulled his nine millimetre pistol
on his victim. Possibly unknown to the robber his victim was armed with a licensed
firearm and he fired 8 shots.
Inspector Hilberto Romero – Dep. OIC, CIB
“As soon as the robbery had been committed with a firearm, the victim
then pulled out his licensed firearm and “freezed” the male person,
told him to stop and hand back his properties. At which time, the deceased pulled
out his 9 millimetre pistol and pointed it at the victim, at which time the
victim fired shots at him.”
The victim immediately handed his weapon to the police and told them that he
had just been robbed by the man he shot.
Inspector Hilberto Romero – Dep. OIC, CIB
“That is correct, he brought his firearm and we are presently investigating
and recording statements.”
The scenes of crime team bagged evidence at the scene and did placed six markers
at the spots where they found expended shells.
:
They also recovered the stolen items from the body of Roshane Andrewin
Inspector Hilberto Romero – Dep. OIC, CIB
“Upon searching his pocket, the stolen jewellery was found as well
as the nine millimetre pistol that he had was also found.”
From 2007 to 2009 Roshane Andrewin was on remand for the murder of Medlrick
Flowers but in march of 2009 he was released. Since then his mother says she
has been cautioning her son to stay out of trouble.
Dorva Myles, Mother of Deceased
“Yes, he’s just coming out of prison. Well he doesn’t
live with me. I tlak to him about it already. It doesn’t make sense. Just
trying to find him a job, you know?"
This mother however is not calling out for justice when she spoke about the
person who killed her son…this is what she had to say
Dorva Myles, Mother of Deceased
“He shouldn’t have tried to rob anyone from the first beginning.
(Pauses) But…. I heard he was in his bed when somebody cam,e to hail him.
They coulda maybe shot ah fi hurt ah noh? And mek police come and do the rest.
Some people tek it different right? You rob mi, I gwen get you some way…”
Meanwhile it is not certain if the victim – slash - shooter will be charged
for his actions.
(Inspector Hilberto Romero – Dep. OIC, CIB)
“Presently we are conducting an investigation and as soon as that
is completed we will forward the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions
who will give us directives from there.”
In March of this year, Rushane Andrewin and his older brother Troy
Dawson got off on the May 2007, murder of Meldrick Flowers when the Prosecutor
entered a nolle pros because the main witness could not be found.
