A 45 year old Australian man went to court today accused of running a con game
on his business partner. His name is Cesar Fermine Daniele, a chef working on
Placencia and he allegedly defrauded his business partner Chen Yin Hsieh of
over ten thousand Belize dollars. Here’s how it worked: Hsieh owns the
Red Hut Inn which is in Bella Vista and in early June, Daniele was a guest there.
She says he told her that he sells online vacation packages and that he could
get clients for her.
She gave him her bank account number so those new clients could deposit money
in there. And sure enough, between June 20 and July 13th, US5,860 was allegedly
deposited in the account. But it turns out the transactions were fraudulent
– the clients never got the packages they had paid for and the clients
demanded a refund. The Atlantic Bank complied and deducted the money form her
account.
So she only lost what was fraudulently put in, right? Well, not quite. Hsieh
says that for each transaction, she gave Daneile a Belize dollar cheque equivalent
to the amount deposited. And so she’s out 10 grand and today in court
number three he was charged with four counts of obtaining property by deception.
He pleaded not guilty but Magistrate Tracy Sosa denied him bail and remanded
him until September 7th because his immigration status in Belize could not be
confirmed.
