$19,000 Stolen from Chinese Store in Sandhill
posted (August 5, 2009)

The Police Press Office has also been mum about a major cash heist at a Chinese grocery in Sandhill Village. It happened sometime between last night and early this morning at the Mile 19 Grocery store – which is named for its address on the Northern Highway. But the thief or thieves didn’t break into the grocery store; they apparently knew what they were looking for and where to find it. The person or persons busted open the lock for a small living quarter at the back of the grocery store.

The room, which sleeps two, was protected by an iron grill door but that was disarmed when the lock was pried out. And inside those rooms the two men who live there had stashed a combined 19 thousand Belize dollars in cash. Two thousand of that was for Brian Liou – but he told us the money isn’t the problem, it’s the identity documents they stole along with it.

Brian Liou, Burglary Victim
“We saw the doors break open and we tried to figure what’s going on and we found out we lost a lot of money, $19,000.”

Jules Vasquez,
“And you also lost your passports.”

Brian Liou,
“Yeah I also lost my passport.”

Jules Vasquez,
“And all your ID cards.”

Brian Liou,
“Yes. We don’t know how much cash, how much cash was left in that room because last time my friend told me he lost $17,000. I don’t know how much he left, maybe more. He just me the minimum was $17,000, maybe more but I am sure I lost $1200.”

Jules Vasquez,
“If somebody is seeing this that has your passport what would you want to tell them? They have the money and the passport. What would you want to tell them?”

Brian Liou,
“If they bring it back I will really appreciate it. I really need the passport because if I don’t have passport, I can’t do nothing. I don’t exist in Belize so at least I need to get my passport back. I don’t worry about my money. The money is gone, that’s alright. I have to get back my passport.”

So far, police have made no arrests.
