The lionfish – much fanfare and fear was spread about the predatory and
poisonous fish in December of last year after it was sighted on the Turneffe
Atoll. So much fear that the Fisheries Department put a bounty on the heads
of all lionfish – offering a reward of $50 for anyone who finds one. Well
the news tonight is that as of today if find one – you will no longer
get a cash reward.
A release from the Fisheries Department says that the fish which has been captured
in Glover’s Reef Atoll and even offshore San Pedro has penetrated all
of Belize’s territorial waters and a more urgent response is needed to
the threat. The Fisheries Department says a contingency plan to now control
their impact will be announced shortly. Until then – stakeholders are
being asked to remove or report any lionfish sightings.
