Today Orange Walk Police continue to investigate to the fatal road
traffic accident that killed twenty five year old Orange Walk Town resident
Christopher Young around seven fifteen on Wednesday night. The bereaved family
has told 7News that Christopher Young who was travelling along with his brother
at the time was driving a friend’s Geo Tracker when police believe something
caused him to lose control of the vehicle between miles forty and forty one
on the Northern Highway.
On Thursday, police did tell 7News that they have not ruled out the
possibility of speeding because there is no indication that the vehicle experienced
a blow out. Christopher young crashed into the left hand side of a Novelo premier
bus, not a Venus Bus as police had told us - that was travelling in the opposite
direction. There are also reports that Christopher Young had just overtaken
another vehicle but did not get back into his lane as the bus passed by.
It is reported that as the Geo Tracker clipped the bus front left end
of the bus the smaller vehicle was dragged for a while before it flipped several
times. It is not known if Christopher Young was wearing his seatbelt but reports
are that he was flung from the vehicle and could not be found for a while. He
later succumbed to his severe head and body injuries at the Northern Regional
Hospital.
The accident is tragic in more ways than one because Christopher Young
was in his last year of study in Cuba to become a civil engineer. After a long study absence, one week ago he returned to the country to purchase his suit
for his upcoming graduation in 2010.
Today a post mortem was conducted on the student’s body and he
is expected to be laid to rest in his hometown on Monday sadly in the suit he
had returned to country to purchase for his graduation. 7News caught up with
a close family friend Glenn Tillett as he waited outside of Belize City morgue
to transport the body back to Orange Walk Town.
Glenn Tillett who is the owner of the Geo Tracker told us undoubtedly
Christopher Young’s mother who is a single parent is having a very difficult
time over the loss of her son but she is grateful that her only surviving son,
Darrel, is expected to fully recover from his injuries.
Glenn Tillett, Family Friend
“Well Christopher was just back in Belize eight days ago and he came
up to Belize City to buy his suit to be graduating next year and he is pretty
young. He is only 25 years old and to be a civil engineer is pretty amazing.
His mom is a teacher and he came from a very very disciplined family and
he was a pretty nice young kid.”
Twenty five year old civil engineering student Christopher Young was
scheduled to return to Cuba in early September.
