On Saturday Belize’s best chefs and bartenders will compete for
cash prizes and bragging rights in the 8th annual Taste of Belize culinary competition.
They will be competing in four categories: professional chef, young professional
or apprentice chef, cake decorating, and bartending. This year’s competition
will be held at Old Belize. The Belize Tourism Board’s Deputy Director
for Product Development Laura Esquivel told us what to expect.
Laura Esquivel, BTB Deputy Director
“Saturday we can expect a whole day of events starting at 9 am. We
are starting with the professional chef competition and it moves right in through.
We have the professional competition, we have the bartending competition and
cake decorating competition and this year as an added feature we’ve also
added a beach day activities so that we can encourage more families, more Belizeans
to come out and have some entertainment there but also really see what the competition
is all about.
Well Taste of Belize was created really to highlight one of the very very
important factors of the tourism industry that is often overlooked. That is
the culinary aspect and also to let Belizeans be aware and let people be aware
that there is a career there and sometimes it is a very good paying career that
is available in the culinary arts field. So it was really to highlight what
we as Belize has to offer in the culinary arts.”
The competition starts at 9 am. A day pass which include access to
the beach and museum is ten dollars. It will cost 35 dollars for the evening
activities which will include an all you can eat buffet.
