He was found guilty three years ago but he managed to escape and spent most
of that time on the run in the United States. Tonight, however, Dennis Quilter
is behind bars at Belize Central Prison. When he appeared before Magistrate
Sharon Fraser he told her that on April sixteenth, 2007 he escaped from the
white van that was transporting him along with other prisoners to the Hattieville
Prison.
And why did he run in the first place? Well according to the escape artist
and burglar he and three other prisoners came out of the back of the vehicle
and ran when the van stopped at a speed bump on Vernon Street. Quilter told
Magistrate Fraser the he escaped because some people at the prison were being
paid to move him around and they were trying to kill him.
Quilter told the court that while at the time he was serving 7 years for burglary,
he was asleep when they put a man inside his cell who tried to kill him. At
the time of his escape Dennis Quilter had served only eight months. Although
Dennis Quilter was no longer in the country, he was still convicted of two separate
burglaries in ex parte and sentenced to seven years and five years with the
sentences to run consecutively. In all, the accused will be spending the next
18 years in jail.
But how come Dennis Quilter was caught after many months on the run? Well it
seems like he managed to make it across the border in Texas where he was reportedly
residing as an illegal immigrant. According to Quilter, one day he was stopped
by the cops while he was driving a truck and detained because he had no driver’s
license or any kind of identification.
Yesterday Dennis Quilter was deported to Belize and upon his arrival at the
Philip Goldson International Airport, he was placed in police custody and was
charged with escape.
