posted (September 2, 2009)

Two security guards were shot last night, one in Belize City, the other in San Pedro. We begin on the outskirts of the city at 3:00 this morning where a pair of thieves - one of them armed with a gun – held up a security guard at a butane depot. Jacqueline Godwin found out about the security guard’s narrow escape.

Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
The blue and white striped shirt lying on the grassy area by mile four and a half just off the Northern Highway is believed to have been worn by one of the robbers who attempted to burglarize Tomza Gas Limited. According to reports, around two thirty this morning, the company’s security guard Raymond Francis Madrill was on duty on top of the headquarters’ roof when he was alerted by a sound coming from behind this gas truck it was drizzling at the time but that did not stop Madrill from going downstairs to investigate.

Manuel Martin, General Manager - Gas Tomza Limited
“The security guard went by one of the trucks and someone came behind him and when he turned around he realized that it was an intrusion and he saw the weapon and that’s when the struggle began and they went into a fistfight and thank God my security overpowered him.”

One of the armed men fired a single shot. Luckily the bullet only grazed the security guard’s arm and damaged the dashboard by the steering wheel.

Manuel Martin,
“At the first instance but he turned around he saw the weapon and the hit that the security did trigger the fire, the gunshot, and it caused a graze on his arm. He is doing fine. Thank God he is doing good. He was treated at the hospital and he is out already. He went home to rest. I think right now they are looking for money. We don’t keep money here but I think in the end they were looking for money.”

The second assailant reportedly struck the security guard with a crow bar on his left arm. According to the company’s general manager Manuel Martin they have no choice but to tighten security.

Manuel Martin,
“With all the crime that’s been happening right now yes, I do need that extra security for the assets of the company and as well for the wellbeing of my employees here so I will do it.”

Both robbers then made good their escape but empty handed. Jacqueline Godwin reporting for 7News.
