If you are a high school dropout who wants a diploma, you can now do
so at Gwen Lizarraga High School. The school is currently accepting applications
for its evening division for which classes begin on September 28th. The school
will be opened for students over the age of 16 who didn’t finish high
school but still want their general education diploma. It is an initiative of
the Ministry of Education and this morning the Coordinator of Adult and Continuing
Education Sheldon Samuels told us they are specifically targeting single mothers
who want a second chance.
Sheldon Samuels, ACE Coordinator
“We want to make sure that we create access and opportunity for those
individuals who have dropped out of the system for whatever reason, once they
have the age of 16 and they meet the entry requirements then they will be given
the opportunity to pursue a high school equivalency certificate at Gwen Lizarraga
High School Evening Division. The requirements are that you should not be in
the regular high school, you must have dropped out of high school. You have
to be at least 16 years of age, and simply you have to have the desire to want
to come back to high school. And once you have those basic things, you can get
the opportunity to come to Gwen Lizarraga Evening Division.”
Lorna McKay, Principal – Gwen Lizarraga High School
“In the evening division, we will have only five core subjects which
include English, Spanish, Math, Social Studies, and integrated science. Basically
the students will get a high school equivalency certificate since they are not
doing the intense program as the regular day division.”
Sheldon Samuels,
“Once they are from the south side and they have been accepted into
the program and once they are within the hundred that the Minister has decided
to give scholarships to, then they will receive the full tuition for the three
years of their program here at Gwen Lizarraga High School.”
Lorna McKay,
“Being a part of the community, the Collet community, we find that
in the evening times a lot of young people come and play ball. They come and
use the school and it is not because they don’t want to come to school,
they just do not have that push and that zeal behind them to finish the regular
day division that requires quite a lot from them so this will definitely empower
the youths out there to make a difference in their lives.”
Sheldon Samuels,
“We believe that it’s a very important situation to get young
people back into school.”
The tuition is $300 per year but as Samuels said, there are one hundred
scholarships available for students from the south side. You can sign up at
Gwen Lizarraga High School. Classes again begin on September 28th.
