Cabinet met in Belmopan today and supported an interesting initiative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It’s an attempt to, quote, “engage the Belizean Diaspora” by establishing a desk in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to harness the collective Belizean human resource in the USA and UK. Remittances from Belizeans living in the USA increased from 73 million US dollars in 2003 to 105 million US dollars in 2007. It is expected to have declined sharply with the recent global financial meltdown.
