It took a jury of seven women and two men only twenty five minutes to decide
that thirty six year old Ernest Billary is unfit to stand trial. Ernest Billary
was accused of burning his sister’s house in January 2008. He was examined
by psychiatrist Dr. Emilio Molina who testified that the accused has a chronic
psychotic disorder and that he cannot assess reality adequately.
Dr. Molina further stated that Ernest Billary would not be able to follow evidence
given in trial. In addition, Dr, Molina said Billary would not be able to represent
himself and he would not be able to challenge jurors. In the end, at the court’s
pleasure Ernest Billary was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
His sister dawn Billary’s concrete home was damaged by the fire as it
was completely gutted by the flames. Her two young sons were almost killed in
the blaze and had to be rescued by an older sibling.
