Fire Wipes out 4 Stores in Free Zone

A fire in the Corozal Free Zone on Saturday night wiped out four stores and took with it more than a million dollars in merchandise. A security guard noticed smoke coming out of a store in the Belama Plaza at 8:25 on Saturday night and after checking – noticed that there was a fire.

He immediately called the Corozal Fire Department who responded as well as fire trucks from Chetumal. They brought the fire under control at 10:30 but by that time it had already destroyed merchandise belonging to Kristan International Company Limited, A-One Imports Limited, Tresbudhas Company Limited, and Tiyush International Limited. The loss is estimated to be US$650,000 or just over $1.3 million Belize dollars. Fire investigators are still investigating to determine a cause.

It is of note that the fire reignited yesterday around 1 pm in one of the stores. That fire was extinguished around 4 pm. The Free Zone’s Chief Executive Officer Raul Rosado told us the Fire Department and free zone management are still investigating to determine a cause. This is the third fire in the Corozal Free Zone since November of 2007.
