A fire in the Corozal Free Zone on Saturday night wiped out four stores and
took with it more than a million dollars in merchandise. A security guard noticed
smoke coming out of a store in the Belama Plaza at 8:25 on Saturday night and
after checking – noticed that there was a fire.
He immediately called the Corozal Fire Department who responded as well as
fire trucks from Chetumal. They brought the fire under control at 10:30 but
by that time it had already destroyed merchandise belonging to Kristan International
Company Limited, A-One Imports Limited, Tresbudhas Company Limited, and Tiyush
International Limited. The loss is estimated to be US$650,000 or just over $1.3
million Belize dollars. Fire investigators are still investigating to determine
a cause.
It is of note that the fire reignited yesterday around 1 pm in one of the stores.
That fire was extinguished around 4 pm. The Free Zone’s Chief Executive
Officer Raul Rosado told us the Fire Department and free zone management are
still investigating to determine a cause. This is the third fire in the Corozal
Free Zone since November of 2007.
