The Customs Department has destroyed tens of millions of US dollars worth of
pseudo ephedrine in the last year. But it’s a much sought after drug in
North American, and once demand is high, the supply will find its way through
– which means that even if law enforcers close one door, traffickers will
try to open another.
And according to official word from the Customs Department they received information
that a Federal Express package would be sent to Belize yesterday containing
pseudo ephedrine. According to Customs, it seems an employee in the cargo area
at the airport that processes Fed-Ex may have been paid to collect the package
and pass on the contents to a third party.
Customs confirmed that the name on the package was fictitious. Customs spokesperson
Colin Griffith told us that the cargo area employee opened the Fed-Ex box to
get out the pseudo-ephedrine but found to the surprise of both Customs –
which was observing and him – that inside was only toys and books –
no pills! Customs still arrested the person for opening a package which was
not addressed to him. Griffith told us this evening that they had not decided
if they would proceed with charges.
