A Guatemalan farmer was murdered yesterday in El Progresso village
in the Cayo District. San Ignacio Police say that sometime after 7 pm they were
called out to the village –which is located at 7 miles on the mountain
pine Ridge Road. Lying in the center of the village was the body of a man that
had been chopped to death. He had three chop wounds to the back, one near his
eye, and one on the right arm. Villagers have identified him as Pedro Cob but
police are still working to confirm it. The second in command of San Ignacio
Police Inspector Dinsdale Thompson told us by phone that it started as an argument
and ended as a murder.
Insp. Dinsdale Thompson, San Ignacio Police
“Our investigation reveals so far that there was an argument and the
guy who allegedly did the killing was apparently under the influence of alcohol.”
Keith Swift,
“Do you know what the argument was about?”
Insp. Dinsdale Thompson,
“No we do not have that information as to what the argument was about
at this moment.
At present we do have two persons detained and our investigation continues.
We also found out that an individual from the same village had detained one
of the individuals that we have in custody as he saw him at the moment with
a machete in his hand and so the person went and detained this individual and
so we were able to do some investigation and found out that we do believe that
this individual has something to do, can assist us in our investigation pertaining
to the murder.”
Police haven’t confirmed if the machete was the murder weapon
but it had blood on it. The two detainees have been identified as Zacharias
Tesecum and Pedro Hernandez.
