New School Building for Lady of Guadalupe RC
posted (September 23, 2009)

Lady of Gaudalupe RC School in Belmopan featured the top primary school finisher on last year’s PSE – and the school is building on its strength in the Primary area to open a secondary school in the capital. The groundbreaking was held yesterday but the news was area representative’s John Salidivar’s comments on the church state system at the opening of this Roman Catholic School.

Hon. John Saldivar, Belmopan Area Rep.
“My government, the government of Belize firmly believes in the church-state relationship. Our efforts to reform the education system is in no way shape or form an attack on that relationship. But we cannot continue to bury our heads in the sands and think that there isn’t anything wrong. We need a Belize that will be able to compete in the global economy and it means then that where things are not working, we need to fix and we do not want to have this discourse in the media, on the television or on the radio.

We need to sit in the boardrooms if you want to call it that and work our problems out. I extend a challenge to all who share this vision of a better education system to sit with us, to sit with my government, to sit with the Minister of Education, let us work it out together. We believe, as I said and I repeat, in the church state system. But when we have over 60% of our teachers that are not trained, we have to do something about it.”

After those remarks, the ribbon was cut.
