He’s only 24 years old but Mexican Guitarist, Cecilio Perrera,
is already considered a maestro of his instrument. The Merida native is studying
classical guitar in Austria, birthplace of Mozart. But He’s in Belize
tonight at the invitation of the Mexican Embassy. The highlight of his visit
will be a concert tomorrow night at the Bliss Center and he stopped by today
to explain how he uses his guitar to infuse new life into old Mexican classics.
Cecilio Perera, Mexican Guitarist
“When I play the guitar I try to copy the sound of the trumpet to
like the base of the violin to feel close to the mariachi to Mexican style.
I always try to find my own style when I play the guitar. Of course I have a
big respect to the composers but always I like to put a little bit of myself
in the music that I play. I live in Austria and I always try to understand how
to play the European composers, for example, but I think I always have my Latin
American passion, my Mexican blood. And it is possible, I think it is possible
to hear it when I am playing whoever; Latin American composers of course or
European composers or Asian composers. I respect that style but I always try
to put my Mexican soul into it.”
Perrera has won prestigious competitions worldwide for his virtuosity.
His concert in Belize will be held on tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at the Bliss Centre
and entrance is free. Perera gave a Master Class earlier this evening.
