2 School Kids Shot in Mahogany Street Crossfire
posted (September 28, 2009)

There was chaos on Magohany Street this afternoon when two primary school students were shot. At around 3:45 - the 9 and 12 year old along with dozens of other students were on Mahogany Street walking home from school when a gunman on a bicycle opened fire. His target was Brandon Smith but an eyewitness told us off camera that the gunman recklessly opened fire on a street filled with primary school students and their parents.

Voice of Eyewitness,
“I was coming from school with my child when I noticed there were some guys sitting in front of the chiney on Mahogany Street and a lone gunman came on a bicycle and jumped off and fired couple gunshots and caught two kids, missing one, and caught the gunman that was running from them and he just jumped back on his bicycle and he continued to ride on his way down to Casarina Street area.”

Keith Swift,
“So there were a lot of kids on this street at this time?”

Voice of Eyewitness,
“Yes there were a lot of kids from St. Luke’s and St. Martin’s School and two of the kids from St. Martin’s School got shot and he just continued firing the shots. I think it is not nice because a lot of kids can get hurt and get shot at the same time.”

Brandon Smith was shot in his shoulder and we are told that doctors removed a 9 milimeter from his arm. But the news tonight is about the students who were shot. They are 9 year old Alex Estell and 12 year old Rosalyn Ranguy. Both are students at St. Martin’s De Porress Primary School and both were shot in the leg. We spoke to family members of both victims – starting with the distraught mother of Alex Estell. Jocelyn Lamb told Keith Swift she was at home at the time and heard the shots but didn’t expect her 9 year old son was one of the victims.

Keith Swift,
“Who was injured for you?”

Jocelyn Lamb, Mother of Shooting Victim
“My baby. I was home and I heard the shots and when I looked out I saw a young man run come on bike and told me they just shot up my baby but he only got it in the foot and another little girl got shot in her foot too. They say they ran into the bush and when they ran into the bush, the guys were still shooting.”

Keith Swift,
“So your son was coming home from school?”

Jocelyn Lamb,
“Yes.”

Keith Swift,
“How is he doing?”

Jocelyn Lamb,
“I don’t know because I don’t want to see him…I can’t take those things.”

Angelina Allen, Grandmother of Shooting Victim
“When I came here I went inside and I saw my granddaughter on the bed and her foot is wrapped up already and she is crying and I asked her how she feels and she says she just feels frightened and I told her don’t worry because it is nothing serious. She only got a cut.

This is the socks that my grand daughter was wearing while coming from school when she got shit.”

Sister of Shooting Victim,
“I was out and when I went home my grandmother was passing and they told me so I hurry came and they told me what happened. But that is total nonsense because those boys don’t have no sense because big day when school time, school just over, they should know that a lot of innocent children are on the street. They shouldn’t have done it like that. They should have done it at night or something else. They really need to do something about this because you are killing and getting away free and that is why they are doing these things. We just want them to look into it and do something fi we because my sister could have gotten it worse than that.”

Both students are at the Karl Heusner memorial hospital where they are tramuzatized. Police are investigating. If the name Brandon Smith sounds familiar – that he along with his brother Kareem were charged for the may 2008 grenade attack on Mayflower Street. Police we should note believe that he was the target.
