A man drowned on Saturday morning. 41 year old Sydney Hyde jumped into
the Belize River near his Conch Shell Bay area home around 7:10 on Saturday
morning and went under. His brother Wilton Anderson immediately launched a search
and about 30 minutes later he pulled his brother’s body out of the river.
Wilton says the last thing his brother - who suffers from seizures – told
him was that he was okay.
Wilton Anderson, Brother of Deceased
“We were watching him and everything there and we were asking him
if he is alright and he did so to me (lift up his thumb) and he did so to my
cousin and all of a sudden when he saw him go down, we didn’t waste anytime;
I was the first one to jump in with clothes and everything. From then we gone
down and after that I didn’t see him come up for air or anything the third
time. The second time we saw him go down I didn’t wait for him to come up the third time. So when we saw him go down I jumped in and didn’t find
him because the current was strong and so none of us could keep up and I went
to search again in the same area where he went down and right there I retrieved
his body from the water and brought him to shore. I was feeling his pulse and
everything and there was no pulse and no nothing at all. My brother just gone
just like that.”
Orla Cox-Arnold, Mother of Deceased
“I say it is my son’s destiny because he is somebody who doesn’t
bathe in this water and I never see him come into the water and for some reason
that morning he came in. But he travels with seizures and so the doctor said
it was the seizures.”
Wilton Anderson,
“It was a sad thing right. He is my oldest brother and we love him
and everything but maybe that was the way it was to be because I don’t
know what was his situation and thing. Everyday he is around us happy and thing.
He is nobody who has grievance against nobody or nothing. He is a cool, calm,
and helpful person.”
Orla Cox-Arnold,
“I feel it, I feel it because we didn’t expect him to die like
that. But in one way I am glad too because he get peace because the seizures,
due to the drinking, the doctor told him that if he doesn’t stop drink,
the seizures were coming on straight because it caught him the Friday night
out there and then it caught him in the water Saturday morning.”
Keith Swift,
“He was drinking on Saturday morning?”
Orla Cox-Arnold,
“No not the morning but he was drinking the Friday morning.”
Odessa Orosco, Friend of Deceased
“He was an alright bally because one or two times, because he has
a little problem with fits and things right and when I lucky enough to be out
there and see him drop down with the fits, I would help him up and thing. I
would put the salt into his hand and I put salt on his foot bottom and thing.
He always will have a space in my heart as a brother and everything. I will
miss the man bad, I will miss him bad. I will miss him bad Keith.”
A post mortem certified the cause of death as drowning.
