49-year-old Belizean-American Michael Sutherland – who is wanted in
the United States on child molestation charges – is in the hands of US
law enforcement tonight. Sutherland was apprehended near Isabella Bank in the
Belize River Valley area on Wednesday evening. He has been in police custody
since then and the original plan was to fly him out late yesterday afternoon.
But that didn’t work out and he was held in custody at the Ladyville Police
station overnight. He was taken to the Phillip Goldson International at 9:00
this morning he left with a police escort on an 11:15 American Airlines Flight
for Miami.
Sutherland, as you can see, was not handcuffed and in fact looked like just
another traveler. The police officer escorting, him Corporal Brenton Longsworth
boarded the plane from the rear while Sutherland boarded at front. Sutherland,
we are told by police, waived his rights to a hearing which he would be entitled
to as a Belizean. According to our information, he is also a US Citizen. And
now he will face US authorities who will charge him with two felony counts of
child molestation on an arrest warrant fixed with $1-million bail.
Sutherland, also known as Richard Arnold Broyles, allegedly molested his girlfriend’s
daughter since she was 7 years old. The girl, now 14, reported the alleged abuse
to police. Los Angeles Police also learned of a woman who said Sutherland molested
her when she was under 14. We understand at least one of the victims has prominent
relatives in Belize.
