And tonight we have another update on that suitcase filled with 200 high end
cell phones that was found in the Belize tourism Board’s booth at the
arrival area of the international airport on Tuesday.
The Customs Department’s investigation shows that the phones were brought
in from Miami and stowed in the booth in an unmarked bag – on the understanding
that some other airport personnel with access to the area would pick it up after-hours
and smuggle it out. The phones were valued at approximately thirty thousand
dollars. The BTB employee simply had to accept the bag and leave the door unlocked
– which, investigation suggests she did.
Well, that person and a co worker have been fired, but that’s not the
end of it. 7News has confirmed that an ongoing investigation by the Tourism
Board has implicated another marketing officer. She worked at the BTB booth
on weekends and also, it appears, played a part in this week’s smuggled
cell phones. That’s because she helped get a special bag to the airport
which would be used to secret the phones out of the office. The BTB suspects
that the practice may have been ongoing for some time. Their investigation is
ongoing, as is the one by the Customs Department.
