Fort George Area Representative Said Musa today received four-hundred and thirteen
thousand dollars in Venezuelan Grant Funds to be shared amongst 24 constituents
in his division. Minister of Housing Michael Finnegan personally visited the
Fort George Constituency Office and delivered the purchase orders. These
purchase orders are issued from the Ministry of Housing to local suppliers for
the purchase of construction material and components to facilitate home repair
or construction.
In this case, most of the $413,000 will be spent on home construction.
As per Mr. Musa’s request, 11 new homes will be built while 13 residents
will receive grants for home improvement grants. Now the irony of the situation
is not lost on us. His divisions 413 thousand dollar disbursement is drawn from
the same grant funds that Mr. Musa was accused of stealing; in fact, he was
criminally charged for theft. The Supreme Court later found that he should not
have been charged. But while theft was never established, it is – at least
- money he – as Minister of Finance - assigned to pay part of the Universal
Debt at the Belize Bank. The present government went to great lengths to get
that money back from the Belize Bank – and is still in court fighting
for its rights over that money.
So, critics might say how then is it that Mr. Musa gets his fair share in
money that – if he had his way – would still be in the Belize Bank’s
treasure chest? Well fair’s fair – or at least according to Housing
minister Finnegan who told us that the Ministry of Housing and this government’s
commitment is not to Mr. Musa but to the poor and underprivileged people of
the Fort George division – and that’s why Musa’s division
got its fair share. Sounds good, but we’re not sure how it plays with
the UDP base.
