And while the UDP is going through its own purging, there’s great unease
as well tonight inside the PUP and that’s because the old guard seems
poised to take back the party, or its assets at least. 7News has seen a copy
of a letter from the law firm of Musa and Balderamos to PUP Party Leader John
Briceno informing him that if he cannot finishing paying for the party assets,
then the original owners – basically Said Musa, Ralph Fonseca and related
parties will take it all back, by the end of this month.
That’s very hard talk and the letter dated October 16th has reportedly
sent the party into panic mode. The letter advises that final payment –
about $750,000 from what we’ve been told - was to have been made by the
end of last year but it was not and the letter advises: “....our clients'
patience and tolerance have been exhausted. You are therefore advised that unless
full settlement is made on or before the 30th October 2009, the agreement will
be treated as repudiated by you and our clients will have no other alternative
than to re-possess the assets....” Those assets are Positive Vibes
Radio, the Belize Times and the party headquarters, Independence Hall on Queen
Street.
It’s not the first time that the issue has arisen; it did so in early
2009 – but with former party leader Said Musa recently given a seat on
the executive – our information is that it was the expectation of the
new leader that the matter would have been left to lie. That it has been resuscitated
suggests that the resurgent Mr. Musa fresh off the launch of his book and securing
a seat on the executive is flexing his political muscle. And according to the
word of the letter, Briceno has a little over a week to come up with three quarter
million dollars to make sure that he flexes down. We’ll keep you posted.
